The Sir David Owen Population Centre, University of Wales Cardiff,
was established in 1972. The Centre offers widely-recognised
education and training in the management of population policies
and programmes and reproductive health activities.
A range of short, Certificate study programme are available,
as well as two single-year MSc programmes in Population and
Development, and Reproductive Health and Family Planning Management.
Short courses in Population Dynamics and Development and Population
and the Environment will be taught in the Autumn term, starting in
September 1997. Their content is outlined below.

Population Dynamics and Development
General Aims
To give participants a clear understanding of the nature and effects
of population dynamics; and how changes in the size, composition, and
growth rate of a population may be expected to effect economic and
social development.
The course contents also includes training in social research methods
for population and environmental research.
Specific Objectives
1. to describe the demographic levels and trends of a country or
region, and the sources of data available for this purpose; 2. to
understand the interaction between population size, distribution and
structure on the one hand, and fertility, mortality and migration on
the other; 3. to analyse fertility levels and trends in terms of (a)
immediate social and biological mechanisms; and (b) the underlying
social, economic and cultural factors influencing such mechanisms; 4.
to appreciate the breadth of research skills applied in the study of
population; 5. to understand the social context of population
programmes and the consequent limitations under which they operate and
the objectives to which they should aspire.

Population and the Environment
General Aims
To introduce participants to the debate surrounding human population
growth in relation to environmental problems and issues. This course
sets out to explore the inter-relationships between population,
development and the environment and provide participants with a
balanced insight into these issues through a multi-disciplinary
approach.
The course contents also includes training in social research methods
for population and environmental research.
Specific Objectives
1. to identify how, and under what conditions, population growth
affects the environment; 2. to approach environmental problems with a
multi-disciplinary awareness, in recognition of the complexity of
their contributing factors; 3. to display balanced insight into the
history of the population and resources/environment debate; 4. to
recognise and analyse the consequences of population growth and
environmental issues for contemporary development at various aggregate
levels; from the Global to the household.

Entry Requirements
Courses at the Centre are open to anyone working in the field of
population, health and development. Most applicants have at least five
years experience in their relevant field, although exceptions may be
made in certain instances. No particular academic discipline or
professional training background is specified as an entry requirement,
but all applicants must be able to read, write and speak English to a
reasonable standard.
