TALiSMAN Seminar on Copyright and the Web
=========================================
Monday 23 June, 1997
Moray House Institute of Education, Edinburgh
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Copyright and the World Wide Web is the second of four TALiSMAN
Specialist Seminars.
The World Wide Web is used extensively in Higher Education across a wide
variety of departments and functions to support administration,
marketing, providing information and teaching and learning.
The ease of access to information and resources on the World Wide Web
and the relative ease with which we can publish our own information,
makes it very easy to violate the copyright of others and have our
materials used by unauthorised people in unauthorised ways.
The fact that information is easily accessible and widely available has
created a culture where it is viewed as public property, ie we can use
it without permission or payment. This is not the case and as more
people start using the internet for business critical functions,
including commerce and education, protecting the copyright of valuable
assets an issue which must be addressed.
Copyright and the Web is a minefield of legal, ethical and technical
issues. This seminar will highlight and address some of these issues,
in particular:
What is copyright?
How do I claim my own copyright?
How can I use copyright material legally?
How do I deal with requests to use my copyright material?
How do I avoid unintentional breach of copyright?
What are the technical threats to copyright protection?
Where do I go from here?
Who should attend?
Anyone from Scottish Higher Education who uses resources obtained from
the World Wide Web or makes resources available. This includes you, even
if you only provide links from your Web pages to other web resources!
Attendance is free to staff from Scottish Higher Education Institutions
funded by SHEFC.
