Anybody can read plain text files. The kind typewriters used to produce
which we are using in this email forum.
Anybody can read html with a web browser and if that fails a Word processor
or text editor will make it reasonably readable. Most word processors will
now save in html and the newest html editor are starting to rival word
processing packages in what they offer.
rtf can be read and written by most word processors but its a little
unrelaible as Microsoft has varied the standard over the years (or so I am
told).
Anybody can read postscript with public domain viewers but it takes a
little bit of sophisticationto use the viewers.
Anybody can read pdf files BUT you need to pay money if you want to write them.
Any _older_ version of wordprocessing files is readable by most WP packages
but keep away from the foramt of the latest version. To produce such files
most word processors have a "Save as" option of some kind so that you can
save in an earlier format. Fo some reason many people have trouble finding
and using this option which normally is next the the save option they use
instead.
