As Misha Wolf is still buisy with meetings, I'll try to answer.
I think the main argument for deciding, in yesterday's meeting,
to not accept the SCHEME attribute for META was that many participants
were of the oppinion that all the issues and possibilities surrounding
metadata should be researched on a broader base, and not a move
be started into a particular direction that later-on would be regretted.
Also, whereas some participants of the meeting knew about DC, others
had heard the name for the first time, and so an argument such as
"we need it for DC" wouldn't help much. There was also a question
about the widespreadness of actual use, which was difficult to
answer off-head.
My personal impression about the decision at yesterday's meeting
is that there are two different ways to proceed:
- Start to use SCHEME, use a very slightly modified DTD for
validation, and create enough precedence for SCHEME
to be integrated in a later version of HTML.
- Collect arguments and data and then try to come back to the
issue. I am not familiar with all procedural details,
and renegotaition is always touchy, but my impression
was that at the meeting, there were quite a number
of people favorable to SCHEME, but they were not at
all prepared for argumentation because they did not
expect that this would come up. The decision is not
final until Cougar is published as a W3C recommendation.
Regards, Martin.
