The Rural Geography Study Group is organising a session at the RGS-IBG
Annual
Conference 1998 on the the theme of Promoting Rural Places.
The session aims to explore the promotion of particular types of rural
spaces, places, products and cultures. It is concerned with the
promotion of
the countryside as a space of consumption and production, the promotion
of
particular aspects of rural life, and the marketing of products that are
labelled as *rural*. We hope to encourage a range of papers that will
examine
the nature of such space, place, product and cultural promotions, the
interests that they serve, competing and conflicting images that are
being
promoted, and those spaces and groups that are marginalised by selective
promotions of the countryside.
Offers of papers, including a title and short abstract, should be sent,
by
1st July 1997, to Paul Milbourne, Countryside and Community Research
Unit,
