Apologies for cross-posting
Dear Colleagues,
Volume 2, no 1, March 1997, of <Sociological Research Online> has been
published - the fifth quarterly issue of the fully peer reviewed
international sociology web journal.
Sociological Research Online has a submission rate of over 100 articles per
year, and information is served to more than 200 individual computers
daily. Articles are already cited by the International Bibliography of the
Social Sciences (IBSS), and very shortly will also be abstracted by the
Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), publishers of the Social
Science Citation Index.
The journal continues to publish important state of the art material.
Refereed articles in the latest issue are:
Susan Leigh Star, 'Anselm Strauss: An Appreciation'. A personal
appreciation of the work of Anselm Strauss, by Leigh Star, one of Strauss's
former students who became a colleague and close friend, as well as a key
sociologist in her own right.
Martyn Hammersley & Roger Gomm, 'Bias in Social Research'. Social research
is frequently re/presented as biased - this paper argues about the
accusations and interpretations and ofers a strongly felt and equally
strongly argued position in an important debate.
Beth Humphries, 'From Critical Thought to Emancipatory Action:
Contradictory Research Goals?'. This article provides a response to Lather
(1991) and Hammersley (1995) and reviews the debate between 'traditional'
and 'emancipatory' research approaches in a cogently and clearly argued
exposition.
Nirmal Puwar, 'Reflections on Interviewing Women MPs'. Interviewing women
in power: warm and cosy, or complex struggle? This study bridges elite
studies and gender studies and offers some important insights about the
research processes about carrying out in-depth research with members of
'the power elite'.
Bie Nio Ong & Kelvin Jordan,'Health Experiences of Elderly People in an
Outer London Area'. This study draws upon qualitative and quantitative
techniques to show how they complement each other and provide greater
understanding when researching an important aspect of health and health
care experiences.
Miriam Catterall & Pauline Maclaran, 'Focus Group Data and Qualitative
Analysis Programs: Coding the Moving Picture as Well as the Snapshots'. Do
computers miss the point? The importance of interpretation in working with
qualitative data is discussed in depth in this article.
Anna Triandafyllidou, Marina Calloni & Andonis Mikrakis, 'New Greek
Nationalism'. This article is concerned with nationalism and conflict in
the Balkans over claims of national symbols, as well as the role of myths
in determining boundaries. It provides an important and interesting case
study.
Paul Treannor, 'Structures of Nationalism'. This review article works out
from a definition of 'nations and nationalism' in order to evaluate as well
as to review a wide range of relevant literature. It provides an accessible
and useful overview of a wide body of literature.
In addition you will find contributions to our ongoing 'Research Resources'
section, and book and software reviews.
I do hope you will find this latest issue of <Sociological Research Online>
interesting and that you will visit the journal's pages and reference its
articles. Citation information is included at the head of each article.
