AUTHORS' LICENSING AND COLLECTING SOCIETY
Contracted Researcher
Bursary of 2,000 pounds
The ALCS Higher Education and Academic Libraries Project (HELP) is seeking
to appoint a researcher to strengthen its campaign to support writers in the
HE sector and to secure economic return for them, particularly for secondary
and electronic uses of their materials. Good, accurate and accessible
information will be essential in support of the campaign.
The appointee will be expected to research into the characteristics of
authorship in the HE sector and the accompanying scholarly publishing
industry; to indicate and briefly analyse industry and academic trends
pertaining to scholarly writing and publishing, and to provide basic data on
the sectors. The researcher will produce a written report establishing the
norms for the frequency, volume and categories of publications produced plus
level of income derived from them. In addition, it may cover (but not
necessarily be limited to) such matters as:
HE author/publisher relationship
academic authors' awareness of rights
academic author/academic librarian relationship (within the IT/rights context)
contractual arrangements between author/publisher and author/employer
The final report will be used by HELP to:
*assist in planning, policy and strategy for the overall Project
*identify elements that HELP can utilise to foster cohesion and a sense of
identity amongst academic authors
*source statistics and facts for inclusion in conference papers, journal
articles, presentations etc.
*provide attention-grabbing facts and figures for its marketing and PR
activities.
The bursary may be suited to an academic with interests in this area, but we
would also welcome approaches from academic staff who are interested in
having a supervisory role. It is envisaged that the research will be
completed over 3 of the forthcoming summer months.
Further information on ALCS can be found on our website at:
http://www.alcs.co.uk. To discuss the Project and bursary or supervisor role
informally, contact Joy Foster, HELP Manager.
To apply for the bursary, please forward CV plus covering letter to Joy
Foster. Closing date: Monday 19 May 1997.
Please feel free to forward this message.
