In no way am I an expert on copyright, and my colleague who is is on
maternity leave (hi Chris . . ) - for those who remember there was a
lengthy and high quality discussion on Lis-Elib in Oct 1996 about
copyright.
I work for a distance learning MBA programme with 1500 students
worldwide - we publish our own content with Warwick authors but also
supply students with texts and journal articles. The CLA and
copyright ownership is a fundamental issue to us incorporating new
technologies into our programme (and I assume also opening up
electronic (ie remote based) access to libraries).
We can do what we want with our own authored (and therefore
copyrighted) material, but are entirely at the mercy of the
publishers of other materials we need to supply students with. At the
moment costs for some journal articles in paper format are
prohibitive, and as far as I can see there is no model yet for
electronic distribution, other than what the CLA is trying to
establish on their site.
Much of the work in Lis_elib looks wonderful to me, but beyond the
technology there's a whole load of issues to be resolved, and
copyright is one hell of an issue, and by implication the CLA and the
rule of law.
Regards
Ian
