Candidate Profile
A lecturer is required to contribute to teaching and research in the
Department of Information Science. A primary requirement is the ability to
teach on a new postgraduate course in Electronic Publishing, with a focus
on the underlying technological aspects of new media production. The
successful candidate must therefore have relevant expertise in the
production and dissemination of electronic information, combined with a
good understanding of the various organisational environments in which
these activities take place. He or she will be joining a team who cover
the technological, social and economic aspects of Information Science, and
will need to relate to these different dimensions.
Essential characteristics:
* a postgraduate qualification, preferably to PhD level, in an Information
Science related subject with a substantial technical content,
* a sound grasp of basic IT principles, with the ability to quickly
identify and evaluate new trends and put them into context,
* skill in communicating technical material to intelligent postgraduate
students with a non-technical educational background.
Recent practical experience within some sector of the publishing or
information industry, and / or recent research experience in a relevant
area, will also be highly desirable.
The Department of Information Science
The Department of Information Science is a highly successful postgraduate
Department offering a strong portfolio of MSc. / Diploma courses in
Information Science, Information Systems and Technology, and
Pharmaceutical Information. It currently has eight teaching staff, who
between them cover the technological, organisational, social, and economic
aspects of information in its broadest sense. Its research activities have
been recognised by the award of a 5* rating in the recent Research
Assessment Exercise. The new Electronic Publishing course to be launched
this year is a joint venture with the Department of Journalism, which will
enable students to benefit from a wide range of expertise in a
rapidly-expanding area.
Teaching expectations
The post will involve team teaching on the Electronic Publishing course,
and on other postgraduate modules offered by the Department. The preferred
emphasis will be on the technological and organisational environment for
electronic publishing and related activities. In addition to basic IT,
candidates should be able to contribute immediately to teaching in some of
the following areas:
* Current developments in both commercial and non-commercial electronic
information dissemination, e.g. the design and management of electronic
journals and document delivery systems, the use of computer conferencing,
distance learning, and workflow systems;
* Design principles for large-scale multi-media distributed databases,
including relevant aspects of networking and image processing technology,
and methods for storage, indexing and retrieval;
* The use of authoring, scripting, and programming tools for integrating
the presentation of information from multiple sources to end-users.
In addition the successful candidate will work closely with the course
director, who is a senior member of the Information Science Department, to
develop specialisations in one or more areas and extend the range of
options offered on the various departmental degree programmes. Possible
areas include:
* The use of survey research methods to evaluate the coverage and
effectiveness of electronic information products,
* The "transactional" view of electronic publishing: its integration with
electronic commerce, the development of "virtual" enterprises.
Research expectations
The appointed member of staff will be expected to pursue research
opportunities, which may emerge from any of the above areas. He or she
will be encouraged to work with one of the existing research groupings in
the Department: the Centre for Interactive Systems Research, the
Information Policy Unit or the Database Resources Research Group.
