In the light of discussion about 'clumps' ...
... there is an interesting article in the current Library Trends by
Clifford Lynch.
Building the infrastructure of resource sharing: union catalogues,
distributed search, and cross-database linkage.
Library Trends, Vol 45, No 3, Winter 1997, pp.448-461.
He compares approaches based on union catalogues and distributed access to
multiple independent databases, noting the strengths and weaknesses of
each approach. Not unsurprisingly, where a union catalogue is already in
place, he argues it should continue to be maintained.
For those who don't know, Clifford Lynch is Director of the Division of
Library Automation at the Office of the President at the University of
California where he is responsible for MELVYL, the union catalogue of the
UC campuses. He is also a major player in Z39.50 development activities.
