JISC: Archives Sub-Committee
National Networking Demonstrator Project
The Humanities Non-Formula Funding (NFF) Committee and the Archives Sub-Committee
were established in 1995 as part of the implementation of the
Joint Funding Councils’ Libraries Review Group (Follett) Report.
The work of the committees focuses on the monitoring and
development of the Specialised Research Collections in the
Humanities initiative, which incorporates special collections
and archive collections, and also the wider needs of the UK HE
archive and library communities in general.
The Archives Sub-Committee of the Humanities NFF Committee
(under the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) of the UK
higher education funding bodies), in collaboration with the
Public Record Office seeks to commission a demonstrator project
which will allow for the study, evaluation, and where
appropriate costing of a range of issues relating to the
development of a national network structure for archives.
The project should demonstrate and report on how Z39.50 and ISAD(G)
might be employed to provide multilevel cross searching of a
range of nominated archival catalogues prepared using a variety
of different softwares; to provide comparisons and report on
issues associated with using data encoded in MARC (UK & AMC) and
SGML (TEI & EAD); to develop in consultation with commercial
suppliers and principal users of softwares employed for archival
databases, a range of enabling strategies to support the use of
Z39.50 and ISAD (G) in the context of a national network and to
develop an efficient uniform front end. The Z39.50 profile
(alpha version) which has been developed for the Committee is
expected to serve as the starting point for the demonstrator,
this can be found at http://www.niss.ac.uk/education/src/. It is
expected that the demonstrator will be made up of several
smaller projects. Work will be undertaken and evaluated in the
context of the work of the National Council of Archives Network
Policy Committee, and related JISC supported work in the areas
of national resource discovery and the Dublin Core. Tenders from
individual organisations or consortia bids will be welcomed.
The deadline for final tenders is Tuesday 6 May 1997.
The Committee also intend to appoint a part-time archival consultant
who will act as the formal contact between the contractor
appointed and the suppliers of archival data.
