My name is M.Enrica Balestra and I am a 4th year graduate student in
Italian and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. I have just
taken my M.phil qualifying exams and am about to embark on the
dissertation. I studied English, French and German at the University of
Rome and did a graduate diploma in American studies at Smith College
before coming to Columbia. My areas of interest are 19th and 20th century
literature with specific focus on the relationship between modernism and
fascism, contemporary Italian women writers and feminist theory.I have
been the president of our graduate student association for the
past two years. My main task has been to organize our first Graduate
student conference: "Writing Italia" which took place at the Italian
Academy for Advanced Studies at Columbia on April 5th 1997. Right now our
association is working on putting together
our second graduate student conference - tentatively entitled "Body
language: la lingua del corpo/il corpo della lingua." The conference
should take place in the Spring of 1998, and we are expecting to send out
call for papers in September - we'll keep you posted
A presto - Enrica
