lis-elib,
The very first issue of Internet Resources Newsletter (not an eLib
project) at:
http://www.hw.ac.uk/libWWW/irn/irn1.html
has suddenly started to get well over 1,000 hits a week.
This is unfortunate because it was created in October 1994 and is
totally out of date, etc. Other old pages of the Newsletter receive
nothing like this number of hits.
We have not been able to trace the the location of the link which is
creating these hits. Maybe its too new to be listed in Alta Vista etc,
and we dont have control over the server and can only see basic log
data etc. We think it has something to do with AOL, but are not
sure. Do any members of this list have AOL accounts, or access
through AOL at home etc? Is the IRN on an AOL list? Any other
suggestions?
It strikes me that if we can trace back the link, then wherever it is
might be a good place to ask for links into eLib projects home-pages, as
a page which creates 1,000 hits for a 1994 out of date list would
surely produce good traffic for useful sites. My colleague has added
a notice to the top of the page at Issue 1 asking people to tell us
where they are linking from, but no-one has done so. We've even
checked that the page is not listed in a 'Worst Web site' list, being
so old and basic. None of the announcing lists or directories that I
know of would be able to produce this number of hits for such an old
resource.
