May I introduce myself?
I am Briam Moloney, at the University of Hull. Officially retired (early),
I have research facilities here. No teaching, apart from occasional
lectures or seminars. At I am working on a number of projects.
1. Finishing a book, "Italian novels of peasant crisis 1930-1950" on the
depiction of peasant society in Silone, Levi, Jovine and Pavese (mainly).
2. Putting together a book of essays on Svevo, mainly comparative.
3. With a part-time research assistant, Gillian Ania, compiling a
bibliography of nineteenth-century Italian narrative fiction. Conor Fahy
is consultant to the project, and Carlo Maria Simonetti (Florence) and
Neil Harris (Udine) are also involved.
We have files so far on about 2,500 authors. We have started to enter
data onto computer, using ProCite. The aim is to provide an accurate list
of who wrote what (so different from, say CLIO) and locations in Italian
UK and possibly US libraries.
I should be glad to hear from colleagues who would be willing to check
data in Italian libraries, filling in forms and returning them to me
here. It takes about half an hour per text.
I shall be in Trieste (Svevo again!) from 10 March until 11 April, but
E-mails will be dealt with during my absence. Please let me know if you
wish to collaborate.
Various colleages have suggested electronic publication in the first
instance.
The most immediate problem, however, will be that of funding to keep the
project going over the next few years. Any ideas?
