Abstract: Multimedia learning materials address students' learning
needs in a variety of ways and offer potential for improving the
quality of student learning. Effective use of such materials requires,
however, that they be integrated with the rest of the course and that
students have appropriate support and guidance in their use. This
paper shows how different kinds of courseware features help various
individuals achieve their learning goals and how a Workbook can
complement software, ensuring students get the maximum benefit from
the screens. The examples shown are taken from the WinEcon economics
courseware and the accompanying WinEcon Workbook.
Courseware is discussed in the context of different learning styles
and related to various aspects of the learning process. Understanding,
feedback, self evaluation, independent learning and the pace of
learning are all considered. Examples are given of how courseware can
incorporate various teaching strategies and the role of questions is
described. Possible efficiency gains are set out, and the results of
evaluation studies to date are presented. A Workbook directly linked
to the software is shown to play an important role.
