Introduction to the Internet and the World Wide Web, and Searching for
Information using the WWW

This workshop is intended for members of the UK HE community who would
like to gain an understanding of the World Wide Web. It is appropriate
as an introductory workshop for people from all sectors of the UK HE
community, including librarians, lecturers, administrators, members of
computing services, and information providers. Participants should
have some experience of using computers in a Windows environment, but
need no prior experience of using the World Wide Web or the Internet.
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and hands-on
sessions with opportunities for discussion. Participants will receive
a workbook which will contain workshop exercises, presentation slides
and other printed materials.
The workshop is in two main parts:
The morning sessions will introduce basic networking skills and
networking tool such as the World Wide Web, Usenet News and email.
The afternoon sessions about searching for quality information on the
World Wide Web will build on the understanding of the Internet and the
World Wide Web gained during the morning sessions. Participants will
concentrate on accessing networked informati on, searching the
Internet to find relevant information using some of the networked
information searching tools, and assessing the effectiveness of
different search tools for their own work.
Workshop Requirements
Participants need no special technical skills; however, for the
hands-on sessions they will find it helpful to have had some
experience of using a PC and the Microsoft Windows environment.
The cost of the workshop is 45 pounds, which includes morning coffee,
lunch, afternoon tea, and all workshop materials.
