Dear Jenny,
Business Studies A level is currently vocational - take a look at all the
syllabi and texts. However it should not be so. More emhasis on charities
and organisational structures is needed, organisation in different
cultures, and a little more economic analysis ( I could go on). Then
business would be a more academic discipline.
As I teach in the private sector however, I have another concern. Business
is only just gaining a foothold. The majority of private, grammar (I don't
know much about GMS) do not do GNVQ. If A level is stopped in these
scjhools business is stopped. Some Economists might welcome this (I have
some sympathy). However, the aim of "parity of esteem" will surely take
another blow.
It is of course possibe to study business as an academic subject and as a
vocational subject. They are different and both are worth keeping. If
diversity and choice is what the govt. believes in, then they must both be
maintained. My job prospects are improved too!
