The following unattributed excerpts from messages I got seem to represent the
general opinion about choosing where to spend a short time on the way to DC4:

...In my personal opinion, it would be a great shame to visit
Australia for the
first time, and not spend any time in Sydney. It is sort of obligatory to
see the Opera House, catch a ferry to Manly or Taronga Park Zoo, check the
view from Centrepoint Tower or the Harbour Bridge Pylon Lookout (or from
North Head) and see Bondi Beach.
...Yes - Sydney is better than Canberra.
...Canberra by all reports is fun to visit, but you'll probably find more to
do in Sydney. VERY nice place to visit, OZ -- enjoy. BTW: The Blue
Mountains just north of Sydney are an easy and interesting day trip. I think
one can also find winery tours around Sydney as well (I did one near Adelaide
in South Australia -- marvelous).
...Sydney is a City of 3.7 million and Canberra 300k. Lots of interesting
things to do in inner city Sydney. Less in Canberra. Both offer cheap places
to stay. Backpacker level and up. Havn't used them myself by I think ~$A40.
Average inner city motel in Sydney ~$A120, in Canberra maybe $30 less but
remember as a local I tend not to stay there so not so good on the prices!...
