   --------------------------------------------------
The Institute for Learning and Research Technology
   is looking for new staff.
   --------------------------------------------------

In the SHORT TERM .... we have an URGENT need for
temporary staff from mid January till April;
we are looking for at least:

   * A Project Manager (hours negotiable up to full time)
   * Web/UNIX person(s) (hours negotiable up to full time)
   * Secretarial assistant (hours negotiable up to 50%)

We expect these temporary posts to involve the creation
and testing of mechanisms and structures for delivering a
national database service via the World Wide Web.
Further details appear below. We will shortly also be
advertising several contract posts for this and other
projects. Preliminary information on these may be seen at:

http://www.sosig.ac.uk/nirs/newjobs.html

Project Manager
---------------
To oversee and supervise the creation and testing of
mechanisms and structures for delivering a national
database service via the World Wide Web. Strong liaison
skills will be necessary and the ability to work to a
very tight timescale and make imaginative and realistic
decisions on a day to day basis is essential. It is not
possible for reasons of confidentiality to say more here
about the precise nature of the project but you will
need:

demonstrable experience of delivering high quality to deadlines
a high degree of IT literacy
     familiarity with the Internet
     team working skills

Experience in any or all of the following areas would be
relevant:
     database creation and maintenance
     social science and/or telematics research
library and information science research and development
     an electronic service environment
     software development
     liaison and project management
     training and documentation

Secretarial assistance may be available and you may also
be involved in recruiting temporary and longer term
contract staff to work on the service. Pay for this
temporary post will be negotiated on the basis of your
experience and expertise.

UNIX/Web person(s)
------------------
Responsibilities will include setting up a UNIX system
and web server from scratch on a new machine. Experience
with Solaris would be a definite advantage. HTML
authoring and experience with trouble shooting, if not
actually writing, CGI scripts is essential. Experience
as a system administrator is a prerequisite. Other
relevant skills/experience might include database
management, web page design, OPACs, Z39.50, client-server
on PCs etc.

Pay for this temporary post will be negotiated on the
basis of your experience and expertise.

Secretarial Assistant
---------------------
We will also need a secretarial assistant to work with
the Project Manager and also to undertake other duties
within the Institute. Experience of using email is
essential, all round IT literacy and the ability to learn
quickly would be a definite advantage. Hours are
flexible and negotiable up to 20 hours per week, possibly
more in due course. The right person will find that we
are happy to accommodate your needs and reward you
appropriately.

Background
----------
The rapidly expanding Networked Information Research and
Services group (Project Director, Nicky Ferguson) has
been very successful in attracting funding for innovative
Internet-based projects. Staff tend to work over a
number of projects and be flexible, hard-working and
capable of taking initiatives and risks and coping well
with the consequences. Our many new staff have quickly
found their feet in the organisation by learning quickly,
contributing ideas and enthusiasm early and listening and
collaborating. In return they have discovered a flexible,
informal working environment with a culture of
recognition and reward. Staff development is a priority
within the Institute and there are many opportunities for
training inside and outside the University. Most
Institute staff, including the Director, work on one, two
or three year contracts, reflecting the nature of the
project funding.
