Caroline Lloyd
DECOMATE Project Officer

JOURNALS IN TRANSITION : FROM PAPER TO ELECTRONIC ACCESS

The EU project DECOMATE : a case study

27th-28th February 1997 Scarman House, University of Warwick

The libraries of Tilburg University, London School of Economics and
Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona have been investigating the
practicalities of delivering full text journal material to the end
user, through a project partially funded by the EC Directorate
Generale XIII under the framework of the Libraries Programme.

Generic software has been developed to enable users to search a
bibliographic database and retrieve the full text of journal articles
and an intensive study is being carried out in order to examine user
acceptance, ergonomic issues and the amount and type of usage. The
provision of full text copyright material in electronic form has
involved the consideration of legal, organisational and technical
issues by all three partners.

The conference will discuss the experiences and findings of this
project, the problems that have been encountered and the solutions
that have been found. Areas that will be included are, conceptual
design, technical design, software implementation, monitoring,
standards, user studies, and copyright issues.

Location: Scarman House is the newest and largest of the purpose built
residential Management Training Centres at the University of Warwick.
It overlooks the gentle wooded Warwickshire countryside. Situated on
the Coventry/Warwickshire borders in the centre of England, the travel
connections are excellent for delegates from both the UK and abroad.

Who should attend? The conference will be of particular interest to
practising librarians engaged in, or considering providing, electronic
access to full text material, researchers in the field of Library and
Information Science, those working in applied Computing Science with
experience in library automation and to members of the publishing
community.

Conference fee and booking: The fee for the conference is
[log in to unmask] (stlg199.75 in total). Cheques should be made
payable to London School of Economic and Political Science and must be
in sterling. This fee includes all accommodation, refreshments and
meals from registration on the morning of Thursday 27th February to
the close of the conference on the afternoon of Friday 28th February.
A different person can take over the booking at no extra charge,
providing advance notice is given to the conference organiser.
