Here at Luton we had a literacy and numeracy workshop system similar 
to Flo's but central funding was completely removed and the numeracy 
hived off to Maths. The literacy was continued for one more year 
under the banner of the 'Hermes' project - funded through community 
project work.

The community projects were closed down and the staff made redundant. 
Hermes no longer runs. I have just been informed that the maths 
workshops are not running. We have put in place methods to identify 
students at risk; what we then do with them is unclear. (I, ofcourse, 
have no opinion.)

The OU Good Study Guide is not bad, though the section on essay 
writing is a little complicated I think. I have the Kate Williams 
Oxford Centre for Staff Development series and they are very good. 
You will never convince me there is anything better than a 'real life 
person who actually gives a damn'. This does not sit well within a 
modular scheme, however.
