***ANNOUNCEMENT***
***NEXT YEAR'S CONFERENCE***
***FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS***
A new university year is almost upon us and it is time to start thinking
ahead to the next conference season. Here are the details for the third
annual conference:
Place - Centre for Applied Language Studies, University of Reading, UK
Dates - 1,2 April 1998.
Cost - This has not been finalised yet but it is expected to be
approximately the same as it was for Aberystwyth earlier this year, i.e.
90 pounds. This will include one night's accommodation and the
conference dinner.
We realise that the conference is over half a year away, but we would
like to encourage potential presenters to start thinking about subjects
for presentation, and to submit proposals as soon as possible. Proposals
should be typed and 50-100 words in length, stating whether the format
is paper, workshop or talk. A paper is taken to be a fully developed
talk which could be published in a set of conference papers
subsequently. 60 minutes will be allotted for papers. A workshop should
consist of a set of activities for participants, with a reasonably clear
outcome at the end, and the time allotted is 90 minutes. A talk is
understood to be an informal presentation, describing work in progress,
giving some thoughts on a particular issue, outlining a course,
presenting teaching techniques, or anything else considered of interest
to participants. The time allowed for a talk is 15 minutes.
There will also be a poster wall, so please think of a display that you
could make if you don't feel like standing up and addressing a large
audience!
The address for proposals and any other correspondence concerning the
conference is:
Paul Thompson, Centre for Applied Language Studies, University of
Reading, P O Box 241, Reading RG6 6WB (e-mail:
[log in to unmask]).
We would also like to encourage some discussion amongst members of the
list on what you think should be discussed at the conference. We have
not given the conference a theme because it does not seem appropriate to
do so, given the diversity of interests, but we would be interested to
know what issues you think are of pressing importance, and whether there
are changes that you think should be made to the way that the conference
is organised. You can either post your thoughts in private to the above
address or publish them on the list.
A formal announcement and call for papers will be sent to all on the
mailing list later, by regular post. If you know anyone who would be
interested in the above but who does not have an e-mail address, could
you pass this information on, and let us know the name and address of
the person so that we can add them to the mailing list.
