As an alternative he could try the SMS (Short Message Service) which
is available on most digital mobile phone networks. In order for this
to be successful, the following should be borne in mind:-
1) A maximum of 160 characters can be sent in any one message.
2) The receiving phone is obviously going to need a vibrating
'ringer' as opposed to the traditional audible one.
Something like the Nokia 2110 should do all these things (with
options) and isn't too expensive these days. The costs of SMS
messages vary from one place to another, but generally it's very
cost-effective.
