As to the first question that is compiler dependent and non-portable.
As to the second question, there are plans to increase the statement length
restrictions, but not the name length restrictions. I would suspect that
the attitude is that if you can't create a suitably descriptive name in 31
characters you haven't thought hard enough. There comes a point where very
long names hurt legibility more than the help it.
