Dear Robert
I agree, I think I am too harsh, too harsh on Silliman, and by extension,
upon anyone,
but not because you or they use numerical constraints
its because I don't think they are simply homologies
i pebble that it's more complex than that
it's because I wonder strongly about what the paradigms are
and if i use parameters uncritically I would wont to be challenged
I don't mean you can't use sonata form
Brian Ferneyhough has developed that considerably
I love the sonnet form and remember Ted Berrigan and Jackson Mac Low's
terriffic innovations
and J.H. Prynne's use of sestina and Frank O'Hara and Barry MacSweeney's
use of ode.
it doesn't mean that because a few dozen or humdrumeds even were good
with it.
it doesn't mean it dies there it does mean that it's harder to be
innovative or interesting
yes formal constraint will produce more than a single effect.
even a kind of expansive effect and every form is an idea and more
thanks for your response
allen
