Using the artifice of a tape recording registering his absence but alsdo
his ability to interrupt himself: e.g. "Here he goes again", he presented a
blistering manifesto for the linguistically innovative poetries, which he
reckoned we should rename "Anglo-American Dada Gaga" poetry, a
category used by Peter Riley to characterise and satirise the language
poetries on a booklist. Adrian turned insult to compliment and saw
mileage in each of the terms' particles. He used Foucault on Rousell to
outline a gap in language, a rupture of signification as an analogue for
that work he identifies in Bruce Andrews' practice. This was an
importnat paper in the fight to develop a contemporary poetic.
There were no questions, listeners perhaops disarmed by Clarke@s
artifice which it turned out was to encourage people to attack him,
butwas never likely to work, given the courtesy of the day (a coutesy
which was not unproductive.)
