An interesting paper from Allen Fisher on Progress and Innovation,
suggesting (I think) the historical inevitability of the the former and
indicating the providence of the latter by slide projections of paintings.
I was surprised I think because I expected to see progressivist notions
of art questioned (I note Popper in Allen bibliography); and differentiated
from innovation.
Can there be innovation without progress? Does art get better? Or is this
an attitude or a stance for the artist?
There was a long discussion at the end which turned on notions of
community. Some interesting ideas for a flexible notion of group subject
(the term wasn't used but it was early Guattari), derived partly from Ben
Watson's sense of free musicians working in various contexts. (They do
suggest this, I feel, listening to the way, say Tippet talks about wortking
with various ensembles). I can't remember what this had to do with
progress???
