This message should reach most of the participants. I shall give Maggie and
Jennifer printed copies. Some of you have difficulty with attached
documents so I am including it in the message.

Backchannel or phone on anything you want to know, participant or not.

Further bulletins as soon as I can make contact with our hosts.

Arrangements for the Saturday colloquium

- REGISTRATION
- FEES
- STRUCTURE OF THE DAY
- RUNNING ORDER
- CHAIRING
- EQUIPMENT
- LUNCH etc
- BOOKSTALL
- PARKING
- AOB

REGISTRATION 9.30 to 10.00. If you are early, you will probably get coffee.

FEES – the CES rate always was £15 with a concession of £7-50. During the
summer I made a strong plea for a further concessionary rate of £5.00 for
SVP regulars and associates because so many are in poor financial
circumstances. It has been impossible to verify that this has been
accepted, hence my unwillingness before to announce the other rates.

I am still endeavouring to ensure this lower rate happens

STRUCTURE OF THE DAY

There was a planned structure / running order months back, and all I need
is the agreement with others on refreshments timings and so on.

I have moved back the planned starting time in favour of something more
flexible, more in line with the intended spirit of the thing to enable
sessions to go on for longer or shorter periods as necessary and
appropriate. There is enough time for everyone. The speakers are speaking
to provoke debate not as an end in itself. I hope for discussion. We need
it.

There will be timings as guidance to the chair to avoid timing out. The
chair will hopefully say very very little!

I would rather we moved on when discussion is complete than by the clock
except where an unexpectedly long discussion threatens to run us out of
time – which would be exciting but awkward.

The retiming has made it awkward for the planned first speakers to get
there on time – my apologies - PLUS John Cayley has an unavoidable
appointment later. So the order has been moved round.

The proposed running order is open to review before or during the event.

I have asked for the room to be in the round so that it will be easy to
combine topics or refer back, so that people feel free to join in, though
not I hope to speak over

Finally, I have tried to avoid combining those who live together, those who
may have edited anthologies together and so on so that each person is there
as themselves and not as part of some other grouping

RUNNING ORDER

Brief opening remarks (Upton + any response)
John Cayley
Lawrence Upton
Peter Larkin – or Allen Fisher
Allen Fisher – or Peter Larkin
Patricia Farrell

Adrian Clarke
Maggie O'Sullivan
Jennifer Pike
Robert Sheppard
Frances Presley
Plans for future colloquia and / or other events by svp and / or others

CHAIRING

I put myself forward as Chair. I have asked Harry Gilonis to share it with
me. Volunteers are welcome, but if there are none there is a default.

EQUIPMENT

I have asked, as requested, for ohp, slide screen, slide projector, record
deck, playback tape recorder. No confirmation has been received.

I have a screen and a tape recorder. Slide projector is possible. Only I
need the record deck and I can do without.

LUNCH etc

Lunch was arranged for speakers. I assume that applies. On Saturday, it may
be Tottenham Ct Rd before there is an eatery open. I would like lunch not
to be too long so that we don't lose momentum and with a view to not going
on late unless necessary. I am suggesting therefore against pub at lunch
time, me included, though of course it's up to individuals.

No smoking in the colloquium.

BOOKSTALL

has been subsidised by RSE in return for which they get the pride of place
/ biggest bit. But do bring your wares bearing in mind that limitation.

PARKING

I am told it should be possible to park in either car park. I am trying to
check this.

AOB

Finally, I haven't heard from anyone who has managed to arrange finance. If
anyone has, backchannel to me.
