i want to say how wrong i think this business of _gratutitously
exhibitionist_.. i dont recognise it and i have read all that's published
as far as i know
i wld urge Keith to look again because there's a lot more going on there...
with the end of Eric's work, perhaps *because of that end, I have looked at
Eric's poetry more carefully. I didnt consciously look at it more
carefully; but as my enjoyment and admiration has increased it is obvious
that I wasnt looking carefully enough before... it's careful stuff... it
takes work but then what doesnt
<<Peterjon Skelt also suggested that EM's poetry needed to be heard; I
can't speak to that.>>
I would agree with that and, to address the second half of the quote, would
say that it is ALWAYS best to hear the poet reading if that is possible
<< Bill Griffifths interestingly speculated that EM's poetry might be
presented as it was apparently constructed in his notebooks, with newspaper
clippings etc. interspersed. It would matter whether or not EM ever sought
to publish his poetic work in this manner, and of course we'd have to see
what it all looks like.>>
But one knows his willingness to have poems published in typescript,
interest in the appropriate design for books, experimentation with the
presentation of the book. I don't see why one shouldn't present work in a
way that EM might not have considered if it helps us understand the work.
<<Nary a "mainstream" poet or critic in sight>>
well there wouldnt be
