dear Fiona,
I'm standing up at a table which is waist high, looking away from the
table where the paper and pencils are, sometimes something catches my eye
and i wait for it to go, usually I walk straight in and remember the date
and write that and draw immediately without thinking about it except that
I usually connect to the paper on the right hand side of the book and
sometimes I miss and sometimes the pencil crunches graphite breaks on one
occasion I broke three pencils - i missed judged the distance to the
surface that much. but
what do i think about that is not visual? well example could include
exciting smells and yawning and another is breathing and sometimes the
fragments of the World Service on the radio as it plays its hot signature
tune not when its great weather forcasts and warnings to coastal
shipping which i guess always carry images - maps of Briutain maps of
North Sea Irish Sea Biscay Dogger boats rigging fishermen rain
i don't think I "see" anything when I'm doing this drawig but there are
arguments against what I'm presuming here - that it's a romantic legacy -
that you can identify straightish lines and circles and boxes - that any
sensation has its image - well does it? -
it reminds of the difficulty i've been having with Barrett which is that
narrative is about time - where spacetime gets usurped by proposals
that space and time are independent - and context disappears - the
tangental discussions about expressionism and abstraction
when Paul Klee identifies his empathy with trees or Harry Thubron
comprehends gravity using a frame and a line they understand something
about existence on the planet which need not be simply visual - it's a
feeling that can get conveyed through description - but description
needn't be tropic/rhetoric - you could convey the understanding through
coughing
it is possible to have an image in consciousness without a narrative - it
is possible to have a narrative without an image - that's one way
connection begins -
but i've extended this to into g-mail
i'll think again
