After considerable debate, it seems that Mailbase will function normally
tomorrow. The following message from one listowner is about the most
level-headed on the subject.

Subject: Arrangements for tomorrow (Saturday)
There has been some discussion among list owners on Mailbase whether or
not Mailbase should be closed tomorrow as a sign of respect to Princess
Diana. This will not happen, in fact (Mailbase runs in unattended mode at
weekends anyway; not everyone may wish to pay their respects in this way;
there might be considerable problems with bounced mail). But perhaps I
should not let the occasion pass unannounced, and make it seem that people
concerned in higher education are contemptuous of the tribute being paid
to Diana's quite voluntary concern with unpopular causes (e.g. AIDS care,
and the English National Ballet, to name only two). Nothing will interrupt
the Mailbase lists, but those wishing to express their concern could
perhaps telephone 0990-664422 within the UK (I presume it is accessible
from outside the UK on +44-990-6664422), to make credit-card donations to
the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Trust, the proceeds from which will
go to her favoured charities. Calls are charged, I gather, at normal
national (and international?) rates.
