AFTER ARNOLD:
CULTURE AND ACCESSIBILITY
a lecture by
NICHOLAS MURRAY
Centre for the Book Gladys Krieble Delmas Fellow
at the British Library
6.00 pm Thursday 11th September
160 Wardour St
Nicholas Murray, the first Centre for the Book Delmas Fellow, will
speak on the topic of "After Arnold: Culture and Accessibility".
Taking ideas from Arnold's Culture and Anarchy, the concept of
"accessibility" will be scrutinised, and the tension between "the best
that has been thought and said" and a spirit of inclusiveness will be
explored.
The author's A Life of Matthew Arnold was published by Hodder in 1996,
and his critical biography Bruce Chatwin by Seren in 1993. At the
British Library Mr Murray is researching the subject of his next book,
the seventeenth century poet Andrew Marvell. His own poems were
published as Plausible Fictions in 1995.
The lecture will be delivered at 6.00pm on Thursday 11th September at
160 Wardour St, with a signing afterwards.
Admission is free but by ticket only (please contact The British
