John,
If landscape "is" history, is that to be concerned with the "far"
enough? For history one can read an origin in the mass-urban mono-
species, imposition of time over space etc. What would a history of
the far look like, what would be its spaces, what would be its
nearness, what of us would it share?
Prospect and refuge yes, interesting terms and i forget where i
last saw them. Look forward to the essay. You might be interested in
a review I did on Tim Fulford's book on landscape & authority
(appeared in the Coleridge Bulletin). I could send it back-channel -
but now i am imposing time on you.
