This is the VC's memo up to the press release which may be on some
news services tonight:
"I regret to inform you that today a number [11] of members of staff
in the Faculty of Arts have been identified as redundant. This
reflects a strategic change in direction for the Faculty, intended to
position it and the University better in the current environment. It
is also an unfortunate consequence of our tight financial situation
and follows attempts through voluntary early retirement schemes,
attrition and other means to adjust staff to a level commensurate with
our available funds. Those immediately affected have been notified and
arrangements made to support them in this difficult time. In accord
with award provisions, consultation with relevant unions is underway
to atempt to identify ways in which the situation may be alleviated."
There follows the text of a press release. It contains the following:
"The Dean of Arts, Associate Professor Chris Healey, said, 'This move
is in line with a new strategic direction for the Faculty of Arts. The
area of English Literature will go, as will three-dimensional art
studies. Also, some positions in the areas of Sociology and Politics
have been deemed inappropriate to current requirements.'"
Bill.
