aside to an aside: I share cris cheek's uneasiness & sorrow at the
deadening silence which Larry Eigner's work has aroused in our critics &
commentators. Saddest to me is that a generation of poets is now upon us
who have no knowledge of Larry's work. There are the Black Sparrow books,
not all o.p., but B Sp has a long list, & there needs to be some
charismatic person of letters to bring the Eigner items to wider--&
new-sprung--attention. Bob Grenier, who has done so much to keep Larry's
poetry available, has told me that Sun & Moon is doing a new book : that's
terrific. But I dont know when.
A bunch of us will be reading Larry's poetry on Sunday, June 15, at 3 p.m.
I believe, in the sculpture garden of the UC Berkeley art museum. Steve
Dickison of Small Press Distribution is arranging this. Meanwhile, let's
keep mentioning Eigner's name to poets we meet. There is a Slovenic range
of silences in his work. db
