Echoing John's call for strategical interventions
re: Voice Box (well i would, I'm reading there with
Brian Catling and Aaron Williamson on July 8th).
It's my sense btw that the hand of Simon Smith is
working here. If you're on-line Simon (hi Simon)
can you contribute any recommendations?
There might be a tendency to not go to events in
the Voice Box, out of residual peek. I can understand
that. But JOhn's correct in identifying a braoder
tactical opportunity.
To that point, for those who get the little leaflet
for the upcoming Publications and Recordings fund, here
are extracts from a preliminary report by Tony White
(of Piece of Paper Press) that have come from the meeting
I contributed to and reported briefly on here, at Toynbee
Hall.
'That notions of 'appropriateness' be taken into account.
- Assessment of apllications should be appropriate to the scale
of the award and the size of the organisation applying. Perhaps
a number of 'thresholds' could be introduced into the
application / application procedure. It was felt that an administrative
load (eg. 2 years of audited accounts) which was appropriate for a
large publishing house may not be appropriate for a smaller community-based or
artist-led initiative publishing project, nor for publications in the
electornic media sector where companies may be formed for specific
projects.
- Distribution and marketing should be assessed by their appropriateness
to the specificities of each project. This is concommitant with an
understanding that the 'public good' is not necessarily measured by the
size of the print run. It is also noted that limited editions are good ways
for organisations to raise the value of publications: value which gets fed
back into the support structure.
- Notions of publication's production values or quality should be judged
on their appropriateness to the specificities of that project. 'Glossy'
production values are not necessarily appropriate to every publication.
That the clause that states that publications have to be for sale be removed.
That writers, artists, musicians should be paid in line with current best
practice.
That individuals and smaller groups who may not currenlt be eligible for
the scheme be more actively encourgaed to form partnerships with eligible
groups.'
(end of quotes)
I'd encourage inclusion of reading / performance series as integral to
marketing and distributive strategies btw.
hope that offers more hope
it certainly opens the remit
