As an informed reader of Bernstein's work for over 15 years, I would love
to have reviewed A POETICS in the TLS, but of course I wouldn't be asked -
and it's not because I lack academic credentials (which I admittedly do). I
am reminded of Charles' being interviewed on BBC Radio 3 last year about
the Bloodaxe Objectivist anthology - he was asked "why have the
Objectivists not had any influence in the UK?" and his reply was, well,
they have: see for instance, Tom Raworth, Maggie O'Sullivan, Allen Fisher.
The programme's host, ignoring this, concluded with a snatch of Zukofsky
and the comment "this is a kind of poetry that's unfamiliar in this
country..."
I too appreciate reviews such as yours of Fiona's performance, Keston -
more please. Though it has to be said this is a slightly smaller forum than
the TLS' readership: 60 subscribers at my last count. The usual story! By
the way, are we Brits deserting the Buffalo Poetics list? According to
Charles' recent report, there are 500-plus on that list, including only 17
from the UK and 2 from Ireland.
