just to get even more depressing then the students I
mix with and teach lack broad curiosity. This is not
to imply that they have focussed curiosity in its stead.
To give some simple examples:
Fiona Templeton and Brian Catling both performed in
the Norwich Gallery in February. This is a gallery
attached to Norwich School of Art and Design. How
many students took the opportunity of witnessing
this work? Precious few.
Last year in Dartington the People Show performed
on campus - 2 nights. First night about 15 peeps,
second about 7 - or something similarly ludicrous.
Now this campus has a big drama department, let
alone performance writing students and visual performance
students - even music students should have shown
an interest given the presence and contributions
of George Khan. Not that the People Show are the
happening thing. But I'd expect students to be
curious enough to go to pretty well anything
in their environs. This might not have been
very well argued. It's a quick shot.
But I'm gobsmacked by such slacker attitudes.
Not that I'm down on the slacker thing per se.
Just that I thought students would have, those
I've known who were so 10-15 years ago certainly
confirm this, an insatiable appetite for ideas,
works, events and the like - would go to
everything if only to be critical or check it out.
That's indicative of a wider malaise, one which
Thatcherism takes considerable blame for? Or
perhaps it registers a different paradigmatic
shift - away from live events of the passive
consumer variety (i mean passive consumer in the
most active possible engagement - differing
from a dancehall scene, or interactive gaming for
example). If such a shift is taking place is that
not also impacting onto reading. Is there a shift
into the oral?
