Surely, unless one shares a particular christian or religious point of view
with a poet - and even then, the point is the poetry; I am particularly
uninterested in _religious poetry_ as such - as with _nature poetry_ it
seems to be missing the / a point
i admire donne intensely and herbert... but not because they are religious;
given their circumstances it would seem ridiculous to object to the
religious content
i find later poets with religion less amenable and have thought it might be
because religion became less pervasive, more of an option; the brilliance
is found elsewhere as other ways for its expression were found; but I am
not enough of an historian but to assert that as an argument with any
confidence
hopkins i find interesting technically; but, as to the content, he seems
bonkers whenever he takes his eyes off the world and turns it to
the supposed heavens
it's not my list and i wouldnt want it to be; but i do hope we DON'T start
discussing e.g. Hopkins here

| I have just joined the list and I am paricularly interested in
| Christian + religious poetry (e.g. G.M.Hopkins). If anyone else has
| the same interest I would appreciate your correspondence.
| Thanks to those replying to my Dennis O'Driscoll query.
