Workshop at Victoria Mornington Crescent London 6 12 97
Excellent workshop
Stan Trevor launched his collected poems especially multi-voice which,
together, are impressive in ways I had not before perceived - he was joined
at various points by his daughter, by Bob Cobbing and by me
Arf Arf from Australia - Frank Lovece, Marcus Bergner and Marisa Stirpe -
gave a couple of performances. We had hoped they would get a bigger audience
than they had at SVP on Tuesday. It was not to be. Faced with text-sound /
sound poetry and similar terms, the British stay away.
Arf Arf are wide-ranging artists indeed, from film to performance to texts.
In conversation they say they owe a great deal perhaps most to Bob Cobbing -
I think I do not misquote - and their references include Ruhm, Jandl,
Heidsieck, Chopin... many more. They know their stuff and they are their own
people.
They score their multi-voice / sound pieces - they do not improvise as
such - and perform with considerable virtuosity without letting that
virtuosity get in the way of their presence. They are very physically
*there.
They liked us and we liked them and perhaps in the future those who can get
there but didnt this time will do themselves and Arf Arf a favour and turn
up. But I am not holding my breath.
Cobbing and Upton performed a page from DAN so that the aussies could see it
and launched Upton's _Triptych_.
Also launched but not performed was Stan Trevor's _Boogie Woogie_.
Last but not leashed: other contributors... Johan de Wit, Rob Holloway and
myself - reading from my wip _SIC_. AND Bob Cobbing who performed from a
text created by simply turning a copy of next year's SVP programme upside
down.
Quite superb.
I am sorry most of you missed it.
