One of the lists I'm on recently got badly disrupted by a member who'd
gone away and left a vacation mail-response on: the Mailbase helpline
kindly sent the following message [edited]:

YOU SHOULD NOT USE VACATION MAIL PROGRAMS WHILST YOU ARE A MEMBER OF A
MAILING LIST.
If you are going to be away from your machine for any length of time you
should use the suspend mail command. This will temporarily stop list mail
being sent to your address whilst you are away. On your return you can
"resume mail" and obtain the archive containing any mail you may have
missed.
To suspend mail you should send the following command as the ONLY text
in a message to [log in to unmask]
suspend mail listname
Substituting listname appropriately for individual lists, or
resume mail all
to suspend mail for all lists which you are a member of. To resume mail
you should send the following command t as the ONLY text in a message to
[log in to unmask]
resume mail listname
