Dear John, with my usual efficiency I've deleted your original ideas -
nothing personal, I do it to many...
But as far as I can make out from the responses, they seem to include your
earlier idea of appointing an "editor" or "ringmaster" by rotation or
something, and posting poems to the list, and then discussing them. If
this is (roughly) right, I've no hesitation in applauding, agreeing,
appointing you first ringmaster and wishing you every success.
There are going to be problems in enhancing the web-display aspect of what
is, afterall, a mailbase: whilst we can load extra documents, they're by
no means prominently or attractively displayed: I think what we'd be
looking for there is someone to construct a new independent website. But,
with what we got we can make a start.
There seems to be much talk about editorial policy, corporate mission
statements and the like. I tend to avoid such things (tho I don't make a
policy of that) as beyond the very broadest of tags ("inovative"
"developmental" "somewhat-language-oriented") they seem to mitigate
against the potential openness & broad ranges which are the only ambitions
I have for this list. I admire those presses which can formulate policies
as much as cris & Lawrence have done - it was very far from my intention
with Pig Press. I recognise that some of the worlds' successful
"movements" have had programs - and perhaps that also doesn't encourage
me. In my mind I have the story of Gustav Holst, horrified by the success
of "The Planets", saying to his daughter Imogen "Don't judge me by it - I
may do something completely different tomorrow". I guess I'd like that
ability to do something completely different tomorrow ensconsed in the
mission statement of this list....
John, I'm sorry this is so far from anything you actually wrote about - I
hope to be more on target next time...
