Can anyone out there help?
I have a student doing (non-folk-related) research on New Zealand and
how it has reached its present cultural identity. Folk songs came
into the conversation, because of the clear way in which Australian
songs show a progression from (e.g.) English person rueing the day he
left "home" and how he will see old England's shore nevermore, to
songs showing pride in being Australian, to songs that take
Australianness for granted.
However, I was unable to give any examples for New Zealand. Of
course, circumstances are very different. A different class went out
to settle, and the aboriginal Maoris were a highly developed kettle
of fish. The climate was conveniently English.....
All help and hints appreciated.
Andy
