Sorry, but without a test case we don't have much of a clue as to what your
problem might be. It's also handy to know what release we are
discussing (the current release is 1.2).

Reading from docs.sun.com (where the docs are available online), error
1211 is listed as "Tried to write a too long record"
So my guess would be adding a RECL specifier to your OPEN statement
might do the trick.
The Standard doesn't specify what the size of a record should be in
the absence of a user specification.

I'm curious about what you tried (a call to the support group perhaps??).
This is exactly the problem. The best workaround is to open the unit with a
longer RECL.
