We still use F77 in a significant library of mathematical
software, because we also provide a C library that's derived
automatically from the F77 library. If we had a tool that
did as good a job of producing readable C code from F90 code
as does Cobalt Blue with F77 code, and to which the vendor
didn't attach killing restrictions (e.g. NAg won't allow
distributing the necessary run-time support for the C output
from their F90 translator), we would have switched to F90 long
ago.
