Thank you everybody for your suggestions of books to use for the
teaching of poetry writing at undergraduate level. I certainly had thought
of all the suggested volumes, certainly in terms of ordering for the
library:: with the exception of Sidney's Defence and Sitwell's Notebook,
from Fiona (What about Shelley's Defence?). The Fabwer Book of
Scottish Verse from cris cheek.
(I like the typo: the Fab-wear Book of ......)
Some of the replies suggested that mailbase members thought that I had
thought of using no further resources, that I wasn't going to introduce
them to recordings, or do readings, of introduce them to the nexus of
small press poetry. (but most of these were probably people who don't
know me, so that's reasonanble., I suppose.) I simply wanted people's
opinions on this one important aspect.
I would make them read all of these, anmd more, if I could. I can order
generously for the library, but our students will not buy VERY expensive
books (the Wordsworth Classics have had a serious effect on the
expection of poetry purchase prices.) But one I think sparkles with ideas,
and is very readable, is Perloff's Radical Artifice. Others I like include RB
DuPlessis' The Pink Guitar: Writing as Feminist Practice, Fredman's Poets'
Prose, but maybe only for the adventurous. Robin Skelton's books on
being a writer were good in the 60s and 70s, but where is their like
now?
Thanks again.
