I believe much of the spam we get is picked up from our email details in
Netscape and your Newsreader so setting your email to something like
p.j.hollands(delete-to-mail)@lboro.ac.uk might limit things somewhat as this
will fool some of the engines. It would be very nice to have the weight of
UKERNA descending on the companies that offer these email marketing
'services' to any 'enterprise' willing to pay.
In America some individuals have attched statements in their sigs that
explain anyone using their email details for marketing will be invoiced for
$500. They then have legal recourse when the company doesn't pay. Pity the
law doesn't support us as well in the UK. If UKERNA could respond
immediately to any spam and demand that the entire ac.uk domain be removed
from the spammers database (with a threat of legal action) this would help
enormously and would very rapidly deter this practice.
