I should confess at the outset that I am not a professional Italianist. Deo
volente, I'm a year and a half shy of a PhD in English at the University of
Chicago. Ultimately I hope to write a history of Virgil interpretation
before the Enlightenment, but for the purposes of my degree, I'm limiting
myself to (1) the *Aeneid* and (2) humanist criticism prior to 1600.
Dante I regard as the true prince of poets, but I read him, alas, as an
amateur who started late (with Italian; Dante himself I first
encountered--along with Virgil--in a Western Civilization course: John
Freccero gave a lecture on the *Inferno*, and I read the rest of the
*Commedia* on my own that summer; little did I know at that point that
poetry just doesn't get any better).
