Dear All
I am divided (and so far silent!) on all this. But having read
Catherine Brace's 'I quit' and plea for suggestions on better use of
the money, I felt it about time I poked my nose in. First of all,
can I say, that Catherine has a point about staying in purely for the
journals. But, and I feel a big but, one of the best ways of
fighting, is surely to fight from within. Therefore I myself have
reluctantly stayed with it so far (though having expressed my
reservations directly to the powers that be). Secondly, I think
there should be an alternative to Catherine, and others like her
(myself included) who would like to pay their money towards something
more ethical, and yet still academic. Isn't it time we brought this
forum out into the open to those who may not have the luxury of
e-mail, and to those of us who do like to meet face-to-face in the
flesh at conferences to exchange ideas out loud, not just through the
wires? Isn't it time we set up a Critical Geography Forum/Society
(whatever is the politcally correct term for such an organisation
nowadays), and organise our own conferences, journals, etc. I have
been following crit-geog on e-mail for over a year now, and am still
looking forward to when we actually do something other than moan
about Shell and the RGS. I joined for critical geography not just
critical moaning. Sorry - no offence meant. Does anyone agree, or
am I completely off the mark?
