> Inaugural International Conference in Critical Geography
> Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. August 10-13, 1997.

>STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: This is the inaugural international conference of

>international
>linkages and to explore recent theoretically informed scholarship in
>critical/radical geography in a convivial and innovative format.
>
>THEMES: Individual contributors are invited to link their presentations
>to the conference theme. Given the significance of globalization both
>generally and locally (for example, APEC will hold their annual summit in
>Vancouver in November ,1997) the POLITICAL AND CULTURAL GEOGRAPHIES OF
>GLOBALIZATION seems a timely topic. Please contact Bev Pitman
>([log in to unmask]) for more details.
>
>Several special sessions are already finalised. The following are in
>preparation (contact emails provided):
>
> Locating the Politics of Theory in Critical Geography
> ([log in to unmask])
> Globalizing Cities: social, economic and political restructuring
> ([log in to unmask])
> Eating the Other: Cannibalism and Consumption ([log in to unmask])
> Geography and Ethics ([log in to unmask])
> Flexible Accumulation and the Spectacularization of Urban Space
> ([log in to unmask])
> The Body, Identity and Space ([log in to unmask])
> Regionally and nationally specific nationalisms (Alan Pred: Berkeley)
> Regional Economic Development: the 'Division of Labour' between
> National and Regional Systems of Innovation ([log in to unmask])
>
> The role of states in nationalism ([log in to unmask])
> Histories/Geographies of the colonial present ([log in to unmask])

>PARTICIPATION: We have had expressions of intent from many parts of the
>world, including Spain, Japan, Denmark, India, Finland, Zimbabwe, Norway,
>South Korea, Sweden, Mexico, Germany, New Zealand, South Korea, Australia,
>Britain, U.S., Czech Republic, Poland, Canada, Spain, South Africa,
>Switzerland. Regional Co-ordinators (U.K., Scandinavia, India,

>Europe) are working to establish linkages and ensure international
>participation.
>
>LOCATION: The conference will be held both at the University of British
>Columbia campus, and at Simon Fraser's Harbour Centre campus, in downtown
>Vancouver. We also plan to use other facilities, including the First
>Nations House of Learning, and Green College at UBC.
>
>FORMAT: In keeping with the overall goals of the conference, varied
>formats, both in terms of content and delivery, are strongly encouraged.
>Although traditional' 15/20 minute paper presentations are acceptable, the
>following are some suggestions for participants to consider:
>
>CONTENT: We encourage variation and the forging of unusual connections
>between and among academic disciplines, and activist or community work.
>These can include:
>
>(1) interdisciplinary work
>(2) geographical theory and/or praxis
>(3) critical fictions/geographically-informed writing
>(4) coalitions between academics and activists
>(5) community/neighbourhood projects
>(6) activist work
>
>DELIVERY: Combinations between the following suggestions and more
>'traditional'
>formats can facilitate a more interactive and participatory environment.
>Possibilities include:
>
>(1) workshop discussions
>(2) reading circles
>(3) informal gatherings
>(4) multimedia presentations (film, video)
>(5) 'fieldtrips' to sites in and around the lower mainland
>
>Please keep these possibilities in mind when considering the organization
>of presentations. We urge participants to start organizing NOW. Through
>e-mail, surface mail, or by contacting special session organizers (listed
>in THEMES section), participants can join existing sessions, or help
>organize their own. Individual submissions will be assigned a slot by
>conference organizers. In this case, please indicate your preference for
>the type of 'delivery' most conducive to your topic, and attempts will be
>made to accomodate participants' wishes.
>
>
>FIELD TRIPS: Field trips are seen as an integral part of the conference.

> The globalizing suburb: Richmond
>
>More details will be provided to registrants.
>
>GRADUATE STUDENTS: Graduate students are directly involved in the planning
>of the conference. We will do all we can to ensure that conference costs,
>including accommodation, are kept to a minimum. We also wish to encourage
>the creation of a supportive yet exacting forum for the work of new scholars.
>
>LANGUAGE: Participants whose first language is not English are encouraged to
>attend. While we do not expect to have the budget to provide simultaneous
>translations, we would encourage participants to present in languages other
>than English.
>
>ACCOMMODATION: Hotels in Vancouver are expensive and need to be booked
>well in advance. Limited UBC Conference Housing will be available to early
>registrants. The following are 1996 prices before tax.
